Aréna René-Masson
An innovative and sustainable sports facility
The project to expand and upgrade the René-Masson arena was part of an initiative to modernize the City of Montreal's sports infrastructure. This initiative followed the city's policy of eliminating greenhouse gas-emitting systems by 2020, in favor of more environmentally-friendly solutions using ammonia as the refrigerant.
This project offered a unique opportunity to overhaul the arena's entire infrastructure while integrating sustainable development principles, aiming to achieve LEED Gold certification for the expanded and renovated part of the building.
In addition to the replacement of the refrigeration system, the mandate included the construction of a class T technical room, equipped with a control room dedicated to managing the new refrigeration system. This addition had to integrate coherently with the architecture of the existing building, while respecting the specific constraints of the site, notably its proximity to a residential area.
As such, acoustic measures were implemented to attenuate the noise generated by the fluid cooler, taking care to preserve the tranquility of the neighborhood. The building extension and modernization work also introduced energy efficiency measures, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable construction standards.
In addition to the technical improvements made to the building, universal accessibility was at the heart of the intervention objectives, in order to ensure that the arena could meet the needs of all users, in compliance with City of Montreal standards.
With this modernized, functional and environmentally-friendly infrastructure, René-Masson arena now stands as a sports facility that is both contemporary and sustainable. This upgrade not only guarantees the arena's longevity, but also its ability to meet the needs and expectations of future generations, while complying with the highest standards of performance and environmental sustainability.
