A Contemporary Retreat in the Forest

Nestled within a wooded site at the edge of the forest along the Sainte-Anne River, the Vancouver Residence is set within an exceptional landscape, offering sweeping views of Mont-Sainte-Anne and the Côte-de-Beaupré. Designed to fully capture natural light and highlight the depth of the site, the house is carefully positioned to strike a delicate balance between privacy and openness to its surroundings.

From the orientation of the volumes to the selection of materials, every design decision contributes to creating a home that is both contemporary and inviting, deeply rooted in its environment.

Inspired by Scandinavian design, the architecture is composed of interlocking volumes. Clad in cedar boards and shingles in soft, neutral tones, the exterior allows the house to blend seamlessly into its natural setting. Large windows on all façades fosters a constant dialogue between indoors and out, while framing views toward the surrounding landscape.

From the moment of arrival, the interplay of volumes becomes evident, guiding movement and sightlines toward the living spaces while preserving the privacy of the bedrooms. A two-storey cathedral volume connects the ground floor to the upper level, where an open office space takes place, creating a spatial and visual continuity that enhances the sense of openness and lightness.

The kitchen, dining area, and living room are organized within a large open-plan space, where varying volumes and cathedral ceilings define comfortable zones while maintaining an airy, flowing atmosphere. The roofline of the living area extends outward in a seamless material continuity, forming a covered outdoor space at the heart of the project, open to the backyard and the forest beyond. This transition strengthens the connection to the site and naturally extends daily living outdoors. Bathed in abundant natural light, the living spaces benefit from a sense of transparency that gently blurs the boundary between interior and exterior.

The private quarters are located within the large rear volume, spread across two levels. The primary bedroom, on the main floor, opens onto an intimate terrace and offers soothing views of the forest, complemented by an ensuite bathroom that continues this close connection to nature. Upstairs, the guest bedrooms enjoy elevated, immersive views, offering each occupant a sense of calm and a close relationship with the surrounding landscape.
