Galeries Gourmandes
The Galeries Gourmandes project consisted in the implementation of a food market in the Galeries de la Capitale shopping mall, thus creating a unique experience that completes an already one of a kind shopping offer.
Located on the site of the former Simons store, this 46 000 sq ft food market is designed to feel like a true European-style market. The 20 or so small kiosks of local producers share the space with two medium-sized restaurants.
At the entrance, an area for cooking demonstrations or classes, “L’Atelier gourmand”, has been integrated a step back so as to allow the installation of big tables for larger groups. In addition, the 7,000 sq ft mezzanine has been redesigned as a service and storage space.
The visitor is led to discover this industrial-inspired food market through an organic and natural flow, with the standing bar located below the cupola of the former Simons store marking the central point.
On the outside, the facade has been renovated in a new brick envelope that includes three glass and metal boxes, creating consistency between the interior industrial atmosphere and the exterior architecture.
Two key challenges guided this mandate. First, one of the restaurants was to open a year before the rest of the Galeries Gourmandes, so it was necessary for the exterior architecture surrounding it to be ready beforehand. Secondly, to ensure the sustainability of the building, it was also important to eliminate all traces of pyrite under the slab. Thus, 6 ‘ of material was excavated, then backfilled before pouring a new slab over the entire space.
With this addition to the Galeries de la Capitale, it’s now a true destination where you can shop, eat, play and now get local products!
